Outhouses

An outhouse or privy is, of course, not a necessary addition to your backyard anymore. The advent of indoor plumbing basically eliminated the need for outhouses. But many people really like the look of an outhouse. Even if it isn't functional, outhouse décor for your backyard has become fairly popular, especially among those who enjoy country style decorations. If you want to add an out house to your property, you can find them or build your own.

In case you aren't familiar with them, out houses or outhouses were bathrooms in the eighteenth through the early twentieth centuries. Essentially, an old outhouse was a hole in the ground covered with a wooden building that shielded the user from the outside world. The interior of outhouses would have a wooden bench with a hole cut into it. The hole served as the outhouse toilets. Outhouses and privies in the 19th century were like this, but they may have been slightly nicer as time went on.

Outhouse plans are relatively simple, especially if you are just adding it as decoration. Free outhouse plans can sometimes be found on the internet, so do some searching. Look for outhouse blueprints so you can build a privy or outhouse in your backyard. If you do happen to find some free plans for outhouses, check the credentials of the person who designed the plans. It can be a real problem or even a danger to build any structure in your yard that is not sturdy.

When you are looking into outhouse home décor, do an internet search for outhouse pictures. There are a variety of decorative ideas for your outhouse if you need some good suggestions. Some people choose to just have the closed outhouse in their garden or backyard as a decorative structure. Other people use them as sheds to store tools, while others leave the door propped open and grow flowers in the hole where the toilet used to be.

Some places sell outhouses that are built to resemble old fashioned outhouses. These are generally made from plastic that looks like wood. If you are interested in a more authentic outhouse, look for an outhouse refurbisher. These people take real outhouses and clean and remodel them so they look brand new. A lot of people who like antiques and other authentic looking country style decorations will prefer these refurbished outhouses to the fake look alike plastic versions.
