Bocce Ball

Bocce ball, or Bocci ball, is a sport that is very popular in many different areas around the world. Croatian immigrants brought the game to the United States, but other countries where the sport is popular are Italy, Europe, Argentina, Brazil and Canada. The game is similar to bowls or lawn bowling.

Bocce Ball History

Bocce ball was originally an Italian sport. It is still played there, though it has changed since its birth. The sport was originally played in the Roman Empire as one of the ancient games of skill. Italian immigrants eventually brought the game to the other European countries.

Bocce Ball Sets

A bocci ball set is made up of eight bocce balls. There are usually four different colors of balls. The bocce ball metal case is used to hold the bocce balls and the jack, a small white ball that is used to determine the score of the game. Unlike bowls, theses balls are perfectly round and will roll in a straight line. Some people use a glow in the dark bocce ball set so they can play in the dark. If your picnic or party is planned to go well into the evening, it may be a good idea to purchase one of these sets. Just be sure to let the sun hit the balls during the day so they are visible at night.

Bocce Ball Rules

Backyard bocce ball rules are essentially he same as regular tournament rules. The game can be played between two players, or the game can have two teams of either two or four players. Each team rolls or tosses their bocce balls underhand towards the jack to get as close as possible. The team that has a bocce ball closest to the jack is awarded a point. Bocce ball lessons are available.

How To Build A Bocci Ball Court

The bocce ball court is essentially a dirt area; bocce ball courts are about 20 meters in length and 3 meters in width. A diagram of a bocce ball court can be found online. Building a bocce ball court is not hard – you can either build a sand pit to full or half measurements, or you can designate an area of grass the same size. While professional bocce ball players play on sand, if you are just playing in your backyard with friends or family members, there is really no need for the sand pit.
